Forecast/Conditions: Expect a machine worked track with possible fresh snow leading up to the event. Friday night’s low is expected to be around 13. Race time temperature should be in the mid to upper teens with partly sunny skies.
Glidewax: Apply LF Moly, scrape and brush, then apply HF Blue (HF Blue/HF Red mixed 1:1 for 1 P.M. and later races), scrape and brush. Finish by rotocorking JetStream Blue (JetStream Red for 1 P.M. and later), brush with a dedicated nylon polishing brush and polish with a thermopad.
Gripwax: Roughen base with 150 grit sandpaper, iron in Carbon BaseWax Green, cork smooth, let cool. Then apply layers of Carbon GripWax Blue, corking between layers. Those needing extra kick should use Carbon GripWax Viola.
Structure: A universal grind covered by one pass with the Blue TOKO Structurite tool (old fine-linear wheel) before the HF Blue application will best suit these conditions.

Skiing has been terrific this season at nine-mile!. A solid base that grooms up nicely for skating. The classic tracks have been amazing considering the rain last week. A little fresh snow today will improve and freshen up already good conditions. Badger State is looking good.

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. Southwest wind between 6 and 9
mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Race time temperatures 20-24F
after overnight low of 15F.

Glidewax: Apply TOKO LF Moly scrape and brush, then apply TOKO HF
Blue/HF Red, mixed 1:1, scrape and brush. Finish by rotocorking

I had a great 10K classic ski today! Temps in the low teens with fresh snow. I used Toko Carbon Grip Wax white resulting in excellent grip however glide was lacking in the fresh snow due to lack of attention in waxing the tips and tails. Tracks ranged from non-existent in a few stretches to good in most areas and better than good in some areas. Crews have been moving snow to the few thin spots in preparation for Badger State Games. I am expecting great skate conditions and good classic conditions.

Conditions: Conditions are quite good.
The trails are in good condition with just a few thin spots. Very hard ice base under several inches of fresh packed snow. The conditions improved over the week with each additional flake. Racing will be good at the Snekkevik this weekend!

Worth the drive from anywhere without snow

Very good skating yesterday! Worth the drive from anywhere without snow. It is bit inconsistent with some trails smoother than others but the groomer was in action while I was out at noon today. Great for early season some of the dips still need to be filled in with snow. The 2" we got this morning helped a bunch to cover the fallen sticks from last weeks storm. I'm holding out hope that tracks will be reset this evening for a great day of striding tomorrow. Great base building snow on the ground that could last a very long time.

The last few days at Nine Mile have been great! After spending the weekend sking up at ABR I can state that the current grooming of the skate lanes are better at nine mile that at ABR. The Classic track is a bit icy. The warm/humid weather is a bit of a drag, High Floro and structure are a big help.

Hello from the Badger State Games!

Many of you may be wondering if there is snow at Nine Mile. Two of the commissioners skied the course on tuesday and didn't see any rocks. Among the three commissioners, there is over 60 years of Birkie experience and they've been organizing races for over 20 years, but they are human. Safety and a fair race are our highest concerns.

While we want to have the races, we would never put a skier on the course if the commissioners didn't think it was safe. The course is not perfect, but we will make it the best we can.

The commissioners have been out to 9-mile almost every day for the last 3 weeks and know what is going on. They are going out again tonight to ski parts of the trails, and starting on Thurs we will have a group of skiers who will be "moving" snow to areas of the course that need it.
Last night we receive about 1.5in of wet snow (the good kind). In summary-the course may not be in perfect shape, but it will be skiable for ALL types of skiers.

No promises can be made. This is merely a report. Ultimately your decision to sign up or to not, is yours. If you've already signed up, we'll see you this weekend. If you haven't, today is the last day to register online at www.badgerstategames.org.

You can also register the DAY BEFORE the event AT the Cedar Creek Mall on Friday Feb 3 from 6-8pm (for Saturday's event) and on Saturday Feb 4 from 5-7pm (for Sunday's event).

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area Trails: This morning officials packed the 1 inch of heavy, wet snowfall that fell last night. Trails are open to the public for skate skiing today and Thursday. Tracks will not be set until Friday morning so they don't ice up prior to the Badger State Games competiton this weekend.

Nine Mile ski trails will be CLOSED to the public during Badger State Games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (February 3, 4 and 5).

Nine Mile ski trails will be OPEN to the public during the Special Olympics event on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (February 10, 11 and 12)

1-30-2006 Conditions are again skiable after 2+" of new snow. There is still some ice as there was some very wet spots on the trails from the rain. The new snow came Sunday evening and may have saved the day. There were no classic tracks set today and it will take some skill and perhaps a bit more snow to get much in the way of tracks. With another inch and more grooming it is looking like skating will be good for Badger State Games.
I didn't take the time to wax for the conditions today and the skates were very slow in the new snow. With colder temps tonight the snow should set up much better tomorrow.

I did get out Friday AM and conditions were holding up very well in the warm weather. However they were getting soft. Friday PM brought more warm weather and then rain beginning on Saturday. I haven't been there since Friday and am not at all optimistic. As I type this at noon Sunday it is finally starting to snow!!!!!!! Hope is for lots more than forecasted.

1-20--06 I've been classic skiing the last few day and its been great. Tracks had been re-set Friday afternoon and should set up very firmly overnight. There is not a 20" base but who skies on the bottom 19" anyway? Looking forward to a great day at the Snekkevik.

A Classic Day at Nine Mile

Classic tracks have been set and they are good! It the first that I had my classic skies on for nearly a month. Conditions were very good with the new snow. The only complaint is that there is some, but not much, ice mixed in with the new snow. Tracks have a good set to them and range from shallow in a few places to deep. Temps were about 18 and waxing was easy. (Pery Dau)

1-17-2006 After a much needed 2" snowfall Monday night conditions are very nice. With the dropping tempatures Tuesday the trails were startint to set up nicely.

Our High School kids raced last night and had a good time. Temps were in the low 20s with the fresh snow. We used two layers of wax. First, Toko Diabloc Low Floro Red, scrap and brush. Then a second layer of Toko Dibloc High Floro Red, scrape, brush, Roto Brush.

1-15-06 Skating Conditions have declined since I last skied here on Thursday 1-12-06. I would now rate it as poor to fair. It is still very skiable but its getting time to pull out the rock skies again. Some stretches are good going but more and more brown is showing. A good few inches would do wonders.

Conditions: Good.
Base is hard packed and icy on spots but enough snow on surface to get a good grip for skating. Much of the system is in great shape, the groomers have done a great job of grooming for the snow that they have. Icy spots are few on most trails. Classic tracks look to be greatly improved with recent grooming. I've been skiing on Toko System-3 Red during the mild weather with good results for training.

Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area Trails: The cross-country ski trails at Nine Mile Recreational Area are open. Most of the 30k of trails are groomed for skate skiing only. The Alps are not groomed. There is a 1 - 1 ½ inch hard packed icy base with ½ inch of loose snow on top. There is not sufficient snowfall for tracks to be set. There is approximately 4 inches of snow in the woods.

Location: Take County Hwy. "N" 3.5 miles west from US Hwy "51" (just south of Wausau). Turn south on Red Bud Road. 1.25 miles to trailhead area on west side of road. This heavily wooded trail, the best in the Wausau Area, offers a unique blend of forest types and scenic views. The well-groomed trail system has been widened to accommodate skaters and diagonal skiers. Trails have been designed to provide a challenge to skiers of all abilities. There is a trailhead building with indoor facilities and plenty of room for parking. The heated trailhead building provides a changing area, restrooms, a spacious lounging area, hou and cold drinks and ski equipment rentals. Rental services are available only during building hours. (see schedule) Trail fees (for trail grooming and maintenance) are required at Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area. Season trail passes are available at the trailhead building, Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, and at Wausau Area retail ski shops. Daily trail passes are available only at the trailhead building. Building hours at Nine-Mile during the ski season are: Mon.: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tue.-Fri.: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat.: 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun.: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Night skiing by lighted trails); Open all holidays.
